Quick Formula Hack: Convert Units Like a Pro in STACK Estimating
Posted by: MiguelTheSeniorTrainer
Pull a measurement from your takeoff (e.g., [MeasuredArea] for slab sq ft), add a variable like [ThicknessInInches]/12 for height conversion, then multiply by density for tons: [MeasuredArea] * ([ThicknessInInches]/12) * 0.15. Test it on a concrete assembly—saves recalculations!
This addresses common unit confusion (e.g., cu yd to tons)

I do this in my rebar assembly because I’m taking off LF and then converting to Tons in the assembly to go to the estimate worksheet. I have an outline doodled up for doing early structural steel drawings into Tons and then adding a historical correction factor to get closer to the actual tonnage needed for the job after final structural. I haven’t gotten time to fall back to this yet as the assembly is going to be a monster. I’d also like to include my installation materials and field welding labor as these I track as a cost per ton of the historical data.
