Tags vs. Labels in STACK: What’s the Difference?

Posted by:  Laurent Dumont

In construction software like STACK, both tags and labels are used to categorize and organize project data, but they differ in their primary application and the scope of data they affect.

  • Tags (Takeoff Tags in STACK): Are primarily used for organizing and categorizing takeoffs within a project. Takeoff tags allow you to create custom categories for takeoffs within a project. This is especially helpful when dealing with hundreds of takeoffs for a single project. For example, you could create a tag called "Phase" and assign values like "Foundation," "Framing," or "Finishing" to different takeoffs.
  • Labels (Label Groups in STACK): Allow for more granular grouping or filtering of takeoff data. Unlike tags, labels can be applied to individual measurements within a takeoff, enabling you to categorize data by specific criteria like CSI division, room, building, floor, elevation, or any other breakdown structure. This allows for more detailed analysis and reporting.

In essence

  • Tags only apply to takeoffs.
  • Labels provide more specific and flexible categorization of individual measurements within those takeoffs.

For example, a contractor might use a takeoff tag to indicate the "Floor" (e.g., "First Floor") for all takeoffs related to that floor. Within the "First Floor" takeoffs, they could then use labels to further classify individual measurements by CSI division (e.g., "Division 09 - Finishes") or room (e.g., "Living Room").

Choosing between tags and labels depends on the desired level of detail for organization and reporting. Utilizing both effectively can enhance project management, streamline workflows, and improve the accuracy of bids and estimates.
