Formulating that soffit for material
A client wanted to calculate the material qty of a soffit by adding both verticals and the horizontal measurements.
So while scratching my head and the help of a colleague of mine, I came up with the solution by creating variables in the formula field of the item.
Here’s the cleanest way to create a variable in STACK that lets you add the two vertical legs + the horizontal bottom—so you can reuse it in formulas and change dimensions anytime.
Here is the example;
Create a variable (example: U_Width) that represents:
Vertical 1+Horizontal+Vertical 2
Example:
4"+4"+10"=18"
1. Create Custom Variables (Inputs)
In your Assembly, create these custom numeric variables after adding the item:

My 1st variable will take into account the sqf that my material (4x8 Drywall sheet) covers [MeasuredLinear]/32 then multiply it by (Vert1 + Horiz + Vert2) divided by 12”

So you should set the formula to: [MeasuredLinear]/32*([vert1] + [Horizontal] + [vert2])/12

important: These values must all be in inches so the math stays consistent.
I also added another item in a new Item Groups for insulation in case I need it.

When adding the Assembly to my linear takeoff, all I need to do, is enter values.

@MiguelTheSeniorTrainer, If we are taking about interior drop soffits, IE an area in the center of a room where the lid is lower than the surrounding lids, I do the following. The bottom of the soffit is taken off in plan view area with the rest of the room. An assembly, like yours, is then done as a LF take off with a user defined variable for the drop. Use the LF and drop to get the additional SF. Add joint tape, mud, and screws as well. If the client is a sheetrock contractor, they could probably give you labor rates to apply.
We subcontract sheetrock but I do these take offs to to generate historical data for cost/SF for the different SOV contract line items that I track. I use this data to evaluate bids and do ROM work
This is almost exactly how I do my soffits but I just pen and paper the legs and face and make a linear takeoff over it. So if I know its a U shaped soffit with a 4' leg on one side 2' bottom and 3'leg on the other side I just do the takeoff like a normal wall/bulkhead with inputs:
Stud Length 9', Spacing 16", and then sqft is the same for drywall so that already covers it with 9' wall height.
