Use one takeoff for multiple VE options

I'm looking to learn how other Stack users manage multiple product options using a single takeoff. For instance, if I create an area takeoff for a flat commercial roof, I want to use that same takeoff to price out TPO, EPDM, and PVC roofing membranes. I understand I could create separate assemblies and add them to the takeoff for each membrane type, and that might be the only solution, but it becomes challenging to filter estimates or generate reports for each type—especially when dealing with 10 or more takeoffs. I've also experimented with tags and labels, but they haven't helped either.

The recommended option would to be add the assemblies to the roof takeoff. I also recommend using the Estimate worksheet estimate, and filter the estimate by using the Define Scope option at the bottom left of the worksheet.

As STACK_Tim state this is the “correct” way to do this. Let’s assume the job scope also includes other work and I want to submit 3 proposals for Base Job with TPO, Base Job with EPDM, ect… I’m probably just going to do the rest of the job, copy the whole project 3 times, and then do the membrane take offs. I’ll then spit out three proposals instead of bothering to do alternates in the worksheet. With bigger, more complex scopes I’d use the worksheet. For cookie cutter stuff I’ll just copy the whole project and then do the different membranes. I know Mr. Fouche will roll over at his desk hearing me say this about his worksheet but sometimes the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze.

If you add all three assemblies to your roof measurement, then when you go to make your estimates you can make three different estimates and you can select which assemblies you want to include in each estimate. That way you can measure once, include all three assemblies but only have one of each on an estimate. Especially if all other things are equal on your bids, or you likewise have other variables that belong to specific roofing types.
